Founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson and originally named the Illustrated Daily News, the New York City-based newspaper was the first successful tabloid newspaper to gain popularity in the United States. The Daily News attracted readers by emphasizing sensational crime and scandal stories, lurid photographs and cartoons, celebrity gossip, classified ads, and a variety of other entertainment features. The paper quickly rose to become the largest daily newspaper in the world with a circulation of over 2,000,000.
The News was the first to introduce many features now commonplace in other newspapers, including the use of color in its printing and the use of large photographs on its front page. It was also an early adopter of the Associated Press wirephoto service and developed a staff of photographers. The newspaper also became one of the first to publish a daily section devoted solely to science, technology, and business.
In addition to its print edition, the News published a twice-daily online version of the newspaper, called eDaily. Its online edition was a major competitor to the online version of the Washington Post, which eventually closed in 2021.
Each day, a curated collection of top news and analysis is delivered to subscribers via email. It is designed to help you understand what’s happening and why it matters. The News’s editors carefully select the best articles from dozens of trusted sources to make sense of the world, so you can form your own opinion.
